Thailand: a political party wants to legalize...sex toys

In Thailand, the question of legalizing sex toys, where they are still officially banned, is sparking debate. A political party recently spoke out on the situation and believes that these sex toys can contribute to the reduction of prostitution and divorces.

What provokes the reaction of the political party?

The political party at the heart of the sex toy debates is a Thai party, losing ground in the polls. In a bold move to boost its campaign for May's general election, the party has come out in favor of legalizing sex toys, which are currently banned in the country.

Although Thailand enjoys a reputation for sexual freedom, due to its Buddhist majority, it is in truth quite conservative.

This is why vibrators, dildos and other intimate accessories are considered illegal. Violating this ban subjects violators to penalties of up to three years in prison or fines of up to $1,800. Despite this, these products are freely available on market stalls in Bangkok's red-light districts.
